No Wembley for The Rhinos
Posted by southstander on May 12 2007 - 18:02:52

Another Two

After last weeks sensational last gasp unjust winner against the Bulls, everything had to calm down this weekend as Superleague took a break and the Carnegie Challenge Cup took over.

The Rhinos against the Warriors was the pick of the round and selected by the BBC to be broadcast to the masses. The last time we were live in the BBC was the humiliating loss in the semi-final at Odsal last year, lightening couldn't strike twice...or could it?

We bring you all of the action here......

No Wembley for The Rhinos

It was evident from the earliest plays that both sides wanted this game. Leeds welcomed back Peacock, Diskin and Bailey and the visitors were at full strength. Super Steve Ganson was no-where to be seen, although he must have been the favourite for this fixture before last weeks slip-up and Phil Bentham took charge.

On five minutes it was the Rhinos who opened the scoring. A high tackle on Leuleui just in front of the sticks gave Leeds the penalty. The ball was moved left and Toopi crashed over from short range. Bentham went to the video referee and he awarded the TRY. Sinfield goaled from out wide and we were on the move.

Five minutes later and the Warriors got back on level terms. A high tackle on half-way granted possession and territory and after driving in for four plays Ashton went through a massive gap to score. Richards added the extras for 6-6.

On twenty-one the visitors hit the front converting pressure into points. Leeds were on the back foot when O'Loughlin went through a gap off a great Barrett pass to run in a simple try. Richards converted but the referee was becoming as frustrated as the Rhinos supporters with the Wigan laying on and interference tactics. Warnings were issued to several players but would go unpunished as theyellow card stayed in the pocket.

After repeated penalties in favour of the Rhinos, and on the half-hour, Webb dummied and span out of a tackle and over the line. Sinfield levelled the scores with the kick and that is how it stayed to half-time.

Confused Himself

We weren't playing well but were still in it. There had been a lot of clumsiness, and coupled with the Wigan 'gamesmanship' it was not making for a pretty spectacle.

Wigan had a change of tactic early in the second half and it would prove decisive.

On forty-three, Richards took the two after Leeds had transgressed in their own twenty. He did the same on forty-nine when Paleaasina had been stripped by Thackray and the four points taken early in the second half would end up as decisive.

100%
On fifty-two Calderwood made the most of a catalogue of Rhinos errors to score in the corner. Richards goaled for a ten point lead.

With twenty minutes left the Rhinos forced a drop-out and after working the ball close Brent Webb went over on his back but somehow managed to ground the ball and the Video Referee awarded the try. Sinfield goaled to reduce the deficit to four points.

Despite a massive Rhinos effort in the last twenty, including being camped on the Warriors line for ten tackles right at the death, we could not break the visitors line and they held on for a win and progress in the competition.

We were back to our old problem of not being able to convert possession in the oppositions twenty into points and today it cost us a shot at winning back to back Wembley Cup Finals. This was a shocking day to be a Leeds supporters and it was obvious from the ladsreaction that they also felt that they had let themselves down badly.

Despite being top of the pile we've not hit the form that we showed last season and I am still waiting for our league bubble to burst. Still, at least we won't have to go to Wembley and watch the lads get slaughtered by Saints, which will undoubtedly happen to the side that does end up playing them there.

Once again, Brian Noble taks his side home from Headingley with a win.
