Abysmal
Posted by southstander on April 06 2012 - 23:20:19

Time for a rethink
On the roller coaster ride that is being a Rhinos fan, we're definitely on one of those big drops, hopefully about to bottom out and start the climb up the other side.

After being sky high at the end of last season, Brian McDermotts stock is now worth slightly more than that of the Bradford Bulls as three losses on the bounce see the Rhinos finding the kind of form which last season manifested itself with booing from the South Stand and calls for the coaches head.

The defeats to the Saints and the Giants were kind of excusable, but losing at Oldslum tonight was definitely not.

We bring you all of the action here......

Superleague XVII - Round 10

6th April 2012

Abysmal

Although named in the squad, Danny McGuire failed to make the seventeen, meaning that fellow loose forward Stevie Ward partnered Sinfield in the half-backs once again. McShane was at hooker as Hood was dropped from the seventeen, but Brent Webb was back at full-back. But would it be brilliant Webb, or rubbish Webb?

The opening exchanges, in front of a massive Odsal crowd, seemed nervy and uncommittal from both sides. The Rhinos just shaded it and it was no surprise when we hit the front after twelve minutes.

Leeds Only
Leeds finally found a bit of room down the left wing and a nice passing move saw Hardaker step out of one tackle and then dive for the line with another tackler attached to his ankles. He grounded on the line and Thaler gave the four.

Sinfield had a tough conversion attempt from the left touchline and drifted it wide. We just about deserved the lead, but it was good defence which had built the platform.

It would be the only points of the half as solid defences from both sides thwarted more lack-lustre attack. Plenty of dropped balls and daft penalties didn't help the try scoring cause.

Despite the half-time lead there had been very little to choose between the two teams and either could have taken the first half spoils. Despite the crowd the atmosphere was subdued, with neither set of supporter sparking a response from their players.

The opening twenty minutes of the second half followed similar pattern. Good defence, squandered attack, daft penalties and dropped balls. It wasn't much of a spectacle.

On sixty-one it seemed that the evening may be turning the Rhinos way when Oliver Elima saw yellow for something he said to the referee. Down to twelve you felt sure that this was Leeds chance. But exactly the opposite occurred.

On sixty-six confusion on the Leeds line as they failed to clear a bouncing ball in theor goal area and Langley was the first to react to touch down. Sammut kicked the extras and gave the twelve man Bulls the lead.

Leeds tried to buck up their ideas but the Bulls defence was up to the task.

On seventy-five Leeds failed to deal with a grubber through which found its way into the hands of Ben Jeffries to walk over for a try which seemed to surprise the Bulls scrum-half as much as it did the Leeds players. Sammut added the two and it was game over.

Daft Penalties

As Leeds pushed to get something from the game they almost conceeded again, saved only by a forward pass call by Thaler.

On seventy-nine Hargreaves was sent-off for the Bulls for a nasty looking spear tackle, but it was far too late to save the Rhinos who failed to get themselves any consolation as the game ran to the final hooter.

We really miss McGuire and Burrow and look a poor side when both are missing. Bailey was back but seemed more intent onlooking for fights than he did the ball, and Sinfield finished a game pointless for the first time in a very long game.

Leeds were awful tonight, and the Bulls thoroughly deserved the win. They wanted it a lot more than we did, we seemed to think that turning up guaranteed the points.

Simply abysmal - and now we have to avoid the embarrassment of losing four on the bounce by avoiding bank holiday monday defeat at home to the Broncos!
