It was a Rhinos side peppered with changes that entered onto the 'Turnip Field' in the 'Stadium of Broken Clocks'.

Kirke, Delaney, Sinfield, Ablett and Donald, all names you'd expect in the seventeen and all missing from a makeshift side stuck together to take on one of the seasons struggling sides, the Harlequins.

Leeds needed to put a run of poor form behind them and regain some much needed confidence ahead of the long campaign ahead while Brian McDermotts men were justhoping not to be on the end of the Rhinos WCC backlash.

The bookies had given the Rhinos a twenty point start on the coupon and while you hoped that they were right there was just a nagging doubt, especially after last seasons headingley humiliation at the hands of a well drilled Quins side. Leeds were disrupted by injury which saw chances for Pitts and Bush while the visitors had their own injury nightmares. Would it be a case of last man standing?

Leeds calmed the nerves with a quick try after just four minutes courtesy of a Randall penalty for holding McGuire down in the tackle. Leeds elected to run and on the third play the ball went quickly through three pairs of hands before Pitts put Webb over. Burrow inexplicably missed a simple conversion, hitting the post.

On eight the visitors were right back in it and it looked like the game had the makings of a nervy night. A Melling cross-field kick found O'Callaghan who outjumped debutant Bush to grab the ball and ground in the corner, it levelled the scores and with Melling missing the conversion we were tied up at 4-4.

On the quarter hour a delightful McGuire chip was almost caught by Hall but he ended up scooping the ball into touch and over the next ten minutes we bombed three good scoring opportunities, most notably when first Eastwood and then Burgess passed to a 'Quins player when offloading in the tackle just metres short of the line.

Two Tries

On twenty-seven we finally made it in again after the squandered efforts. A Burgess over-the-shoulder pass put Burrow through a gap who found Brent Webb to score his second. Burrow converted for 10-4. Four minutes before the break and it was 14-4 after a Webb pass found Hall in an acre of space after missing out Senior with his pass. Hall scored in the corner but Burrow failed to add the extras. In at the interval with a 14-4 lead but one which should have been much more. Add all the squandered chances and the 'Quins were lucky not to be trailing by 30. You felt that there was plenty more in us in the second half.

Five minutes into the second half and a Webb break saw him tackled ten metres out. Burgess went through a gap off the next play-the-ball and made it to the line before giving an inside pass to Danny Buderus to score under the sticks. Burrow converted for 20-4.

On fifty a Buderus juggle saw him regain posession just five out and crash over under the sticks. Burrow again added the extras for 26-4 and you now felt comfortable that the game was ours. The 'Quins first half effort had disappeared to nothing and the Rhinos were really starting to control the game.

On sixty a Burrow short pass found Lauiti'iti and Ali made it through a crowd of players to score. Burrow added the two for 32-4 and the flood gates were beginning to open as the Rhinos found their flair and the 'Quins threw in the towel.

On sixty-three we were treated to the try of the game when two chips over the defence were brilliantly executed by McGuire who collected his own kick on both occasions to score under the posts. A candidate for individual try of the season? Burrow goaled for 38-4 and now it was a matter of how many. Four minutes later and a darting Burrow went close before putting Watkins over. Burrow failed to convert what should have been a simple pne but at 42-4 we didn't really care.

Two Tries

Then the real onslaught began as the visitors failed to complete a set of six for the remainder of the game, and the Rhinos ran in four tries in thirteen minutes.

On sixty-nine an excellent passing move ended with Hall coming inside to score, and Burrow convert, for 48-4.

On seventy-three a McGuire grubber was picked out of a crowd of 'Quins defenders by Ali Lauiti'iti to score. Burrow goaled for 54-4.

On seventy-eight Senior crossed off an Ali pass and then one of the nights highlights right on the hooter saw a Burrow kick to the corner which was touched down by Tom Bush to round off a twelve try haul. Burrow failed to convert, but it must have been tough with the Southstanders chanting 'We all love Bush' behind his back.

Leeds had sewn up a 62-4 victory over the hapless comedy 'Quins, and they will be thanking their lucky stars that it wasn't a lot more. We bombed four good first half opportunities and Burrow missed five kicks as it was. Add those together and we could well have racked up getting on for one hundred points.

You could see the confidence come flooding back in the second half, a 13-2 benefit in the Thierry 'Spaceman' Alibert penalty count also helped but was a little embarrassing. This is a result that we should be able to kick on from and hopefully it will see us much closer to the top of the table come the end of the weekend.

If there is one gripe about tonight, apart from the pitch and the non-functioning clocks, then it is an out-of-sorts Rob Burrow. He looks like he needs help, and playing his way to confidence doesn't seem to be working. Apart from that, terrific team performance. The Rhinos are back!
