Now I can see the convenience of an 8pm Friday night kick off for a majority of fans. For those who do work it gives you time to get home, get changed, have a snack and off to Headingley for your more-or-less fortnightly rugby league thrill. For others it leaves you the best part of Friday night to go partying and the rest of the weekend to do what you want.
This isn’t an attack on those very fans because I’m one of them myself. But what I am talking about is those damn stadium floodlights that like many night lights up and down the country are changing the colour of the skies. In Singapore it's got that bad some residents haven’t ever seen a star in the sky in their life, and we need to make sure that it doesn’t ever get that bad here.
Worse of all it affects the local wildlife and ourselves. Research has shown that the effects of excessive light on us includes bad headaches, stress and fatigue. God help those players who play under the floodlights week in week out. As if being in collisions that are described as a car crash on the rugby field wasn’t bad enough, without any problems of light coming into it!
Another thing that concerns me with night lighting is we leave people who enjoy astronomy in such danger because they have to go to unsafe countryside spots on a night to fulfil their hobby. We should all be very ashamed of ourselves or should we? After all it wasn’t the Rhinos or anyone else in Leeds who constructed a society where we use lighting at night that destroys the ecosystem for our own entertainment. OK we’ve had to adapt but mutation comes to mind.
We are daytime creatures who are distracting the nigh time creatures and that isn’t fair right?
If the Rhinos carry on putting them floodlights on at the expense of local wildlife then we’ve all got some bad karma coming our way. When the SAS are on night missions, they wear blindfolds for 45 minutes before they start work, so I guess that is a good length of time to get optimum night vision.
That’s the route we should be going down. That way we can see rugby league at night without those health damaging flood lights!!
Thanks for reading.
